Abstract

The 2002-2010 socio-political crisis in Côte d'Ivoire has deeply disrupted the education system. This disturbance was accentuated in the formerly besieged areas(Centre, North, West), where secular and confessional private schools in in particular, were abandoned by the State. Notwithstanding this disengagement, the Catholic primary school of the Diocese of Bouaké was one of the few to have survived the crisis. In the interest of understanding its evolution, as well as the transformations it has undergone, this study, carried out from a qualitative approach from September 2017 to January 2018 among 112 people in charge of the Catholic primary school, analyzes the mode of operation of this primary education system over three major periods. First, the period before the crisis, then the period of the crisis itself and finally, after the crisis. The results present i) a metamorphosis system from 2002 to 2011, which caused on the one hand ii) protests and demands from the teachers’ union, and the parents and teachers association (PTA). On the other hand, it caused iii) new processes of perpetuation of Catholic education.
