Abstract

In Ivory Coast, 24% of urban women use contraception against only 10% in rural areas. Why are rural women resistant to modern contraceptive practices, despite the efforts of the development actors, the government and the researchers? The objective of this article is to demonstrate the role of children in the social work of rural populations and their influence on women's use of modern contraception. The methodology was based on an approach that is both qualitative and quantitative. Twelve (12) individual interviews and eight (8) focus groups were conducted in three rural communities in the department of Abengourou. In addition, 545 questionnaires were completed by women of childbearing age. The SPSS, Epi-data and Excel softwares were used for the treatment of the quantitative data. The dialectical method and content analysis were used as a framework for analyzing the information and qualitative data collected. The data collected in the field has shown that children, in a dynamic of socialization, help their parents in their main activity. Most respondents (46 %) said that their children help them in their daily work and their income generating activities. 44.3% of respondents are using a contraceptive method. 45, 96 % of women used the monthly cycle method. The pill is used by 23, 83 % of them, condoms by 27, 23% and injection by 5.96%. The child is considered a gain for parents. Thus, these generally adopt an economic behavior of profit maximization regarding fertility. People are tempted to have as many children as possible. Thus, the children participate and ensure the economic and social development of the parents.
