Imagerie et imaginaire de l’eau dans l’œuvre d’Albert CAMUS

Abstract

Parler de l’imagerie et de l’imaginaire de l’eau dans l’œuvre d’Albert Camus, c’est revisiter quelque schèmes autour desquels s’articule la production camusienne. L’eau occupe une place très importante dans le texte camusien et, par conséquent, joue un rôle prépondérant. Miroir et miroitement, l’eau permet à cet écrivain français nourri aux racines algériennes, de transcrire dans son œuvre tout ce mal être de l’homme et ce malaise de la condition humaine. Mais l’originalité d’Albert Camus, c’est la propension naturelle à inscrire cette condition humaine dans une perspective de dépassement et de définition de soi à travers les grandes orientations d’une œuvre fort prolifique. L’eau a, en effet, une dimension mythique dans l’œuvre d’Albert Camus. Tantôt maléfique, tantôt bénéfique, elle oscille d’un pôle à un autre et donne à l’œuvre entière une « hydricité » forte qui la fait couler sans jamais tarir. L’œuvre est même une source profonde et limpide à travers le miroitement de laquelle, il est possible de lire les grandes interrogations d’une époque tumultueuse mais aussi les espoirs et les craintes d’un écrivain qui inscrit la condition humaine au cœur de ses préoccupations littéraires.

Talking about the imagery and imagination of water in Albert Camus' work is to revisit some schemas around which the production of Camus is organized. Water occupies a very important place in the Camusian text and, consequently, plays a much significant role. Mirror and shimmer, the issue of water enables this French writer nurtured on the Algerian roots, to record in his work all this ill-being of man and this discomfort of the human condition. However, the merit of Albert Camus is the natural propensity to inscribe this human condition in a perspective of transcendence and self-definition through the major orientations of a prolific work. Water has a mythical dimension in the work of Albert Camus. Sometimes evil, sometimes benign, it oscillates from one pole to another and gives the whole work a strong "hydricity" that makes it flow without ever drying up. The work is even a deep and clear source through the shimmering of which it is possible to read the great questions of a tumultuous time but also the hopes and fears of a writer who puts the human condition at the heart of his literary concerns.
