Abstract

In an increasingly globalized world, multilingual competence has become a key factor in facilitating communication, mobility, and socio-economic integration. This narrative literature review synthesizes recent peer-reviewed research on the role of foreign language learning in cognitive development, educational outcomes, and macroeconomic performance.

The findings of the reviewed literature indicate that foreign language acquisition is associated with a range of cognitive benefits, including enhanced executive functioning, cognitive flexibility, and increased metalinguistic awareness. At the educational level, foreign language proficiency contributes to expanded academic opportunities, increased mobility, and improved access to international learning environments. Furthermore, at the labor market level, multilingual competence is linked to greater employability and participation in transnational professional networks. At the macroeconomic level, foreign language skills facilitate cross-border communication, support international cooperation, and enhance knowledge transfer within globalized economic systems. Although the magnitude of these effects varies across contexts and methodological approaches, the overall evidence suggests that foreign language education plays an important role in human capital formation and socio-economic development.
