Abstract

In response to the low productivity of conventional rice cultivation practices, the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) has established itself as an innovative approach in many countries. However, empirical evidence regarding the effects of SRI adoption remains mixed depending on the context. This study aims to assess its impact on the incomes of rice farmers in Burkina Faso. The study uses data collected from 1,167 rice farmers in the Bankui, Guiriko, Tannounyan and Sourou regions. An endogenous switching regression (ESR) model was used to account for potential selection biases associated with farmers’ adoption decisions.

The results show that training in SRI, farmers’ exposure to this technology and their level of education significantly increase the probability of adopting SRI. ESR estimates further indicate that access to agricultural credit, the use of fertilisers, collective marketing of paddy rice and the number of active household members are positively and significantly associated with rice farmers’ incomes, whilst the individual sale of paddy rice has a negative effect amongst adopters. The estimated treatment effects indicate a positive and statistically significant effect of SRI adoption on rice farmers’ income, with an average treatment effect (ATE) for adopters of 0.4507 and an average effect. These findings highlight the need to improve farmers’ access to credit and agricultural inputs and to strengthen collective marketing mechanisms in order to support the economic benefits associated with SRI adoption.
