Abstract
Interactions between local communities and protected areas play a crucial role in the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation policies. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of interaction between local communities and the Lesio-Louna Gorilla Nature Reserve (LLGNR), located in the Djoué-Léfini Department, Republic of the Congo. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining questionnaire surveys administered to 185 respondents, semi-structured interviews, field observations, and statistical analyses conducted in eight surrounding villages. The results show that 97 % of respondents are aware of the existence of the reserve, mainly through word-of-mouth communication, while the limited knowledge of the reserve's management authority reflects inadequate institutional communication. Furthermore, 60 % of respondents have a positive perception of the reserve because of its contribution to biodiversity conservation, whereas 40 % express negative or neutral perceptions, mainly due to restricted access to natural resources and limited socio-economic benefits. Agriculture has become the dominant livelihood activity (74%), reflecting a shift in local livelihoods following restrictions on hunting and fishing. These findings highlight the need to strengthen participatory governance, improve communication between stakeholders and local communities, and promote sustainable livelihood alternatives to reconcile biodiversity conservation with local development.
